The title mol-ecule, C(20)H(31)NO(8), has pseudo-C2 symmetry about the C-N bond, with the bis-(tert-butoxy-carbon-yl)amino group twisted from the benzene ring plane by ca 60° and the bulky tert-butoxy-carbonyl (Boc) groups are orientated away from the substituted aniline group. As part of an anti-bacterial drug discovery programme furnishing analogues of platensimycin, we unexpectedly synthesized the bis-Boc-protected aniline.

The title compound, C28H40N2, was obtained from the condensation reaction of 4-tert-butyl-2,6-di-methyl-aniline and butane-2,3-dione. The mol-ecule lies on an inversion centre. The C=N bond has an E conformation. The plane of the benzene ring is almost perpendicular to the 1,4-di-aza-butadiene mean plane [dihedral angle = 89.8 (9)°].

The title compound, C(22)H(31)NO, has been synthesized from 4-bromo-methyl-2,6-di-tert-butyl-phenol and N-methyl-aniline. There are two independent mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit. The aniline ring in each of the independent mol-ecules was found to be disordered, with site occupation factors 0.621 (10)/0.379 (10) and 0.605 (10)/0.395 (10).
